WHY IS MY STIMULUS PAYMENT LESS THAN I EXPECTED?

The maximum rebate is $600 single, $1,200 couple IF YOU PAID AT LEAST THAT MUCH IN FEDERAL INCOME TAX.
For the total amount of tax paid look at line 10 of
Form 1040EZ, line 37 Form 1040A or line 63 Form 1040.

The minimum rebate is $300 if you had at least $3,000 in wages, self employment, social security benefits or VA benefits (does not include interest, dividends, retirement, rental income, etc.).

To calculate your rebate, you can go to the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/app/espc. Be sure to have a copy of your tax return in front of you to answer the questions.

Tax Simplification and Paper Reduction are nice words, but obviously our legislators have "fuzzy dictionaries".  It is becoming more and more difficult for anyone with more than a W2 to prepare their own return.  Don't miss a deduction, let the professionals sort it out.  But please, choose your preparer wisely.

Anyone can put up a sign, prepare your return, take your money, and leave you holding the bag at audit time.  For the advantages of hiring a tax professional registered to practice before the IRS look at our What's an EA? page.

IRS ANNOUNCES MIDYEAR INCREASE IN MILEAGE RATES!

In response to rising gas prices, the IRS has increased the optional standard mileage rates for the period from
July 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.

The rate for business miles will increase from the current 50.5 cents per mile to 58.5 cents per mile, while the rate for medical/moving miles will move from 19 cents per mile to 27 cents per mile.

The rate for charitable miles remains unchanged
at 14 cents per mile.

To take advantage of this much needed increase you must keep a separate mileage log for January 1 through June 30, 2008 and July 1 through December 31, 2008.

IRA

Traditional IRA deductions for 2008 increase to $5,000 with an extra $1,000 for those age 50 or older.

In 2008...long term CAPITAL GAINS RATES for those in the 10 to 15% bracket go to zero percent (for those taxpayers in the lowest tax bracket.)

CAPITAL GAINS RATES go back to pre-2003 (8%, 10%, 18% or 20%.) The ESTATE TAX DEDUCTION goes to $3.5 Million.

In 2010 there will be NO ESTATE TAX (and no stepped up basis.) In 2011 -- almost everything from this 10 year tax relief plan expires!
